DESIGNED & CUSTOM BUILT FOR HARVEY PERFORMANCE COMPANY

In early July 2020, less than 11 months after beginning construction of a new 79,000 square foot manufacturing facility, Northland and their tenant Harvey Performance Company obtained a conditional Certificate of Occupancy from the town of Gorham. This milestone was in line with the original completion projection, which is significant given the Covid-19 related schedule and manpower challenges the team faced as the project neared completion this spring. Northland partnered with Harvey Performance Company to design & develop the site to their exact specifications, incorporating into the design and permit process a 39,000 square foot expansion that has been preapproved for future development. The plant will manufacture the company’s Helical Solutions line of high-performance end mills and serve as the company’s innovation hub.

“This facility will accelerate our ability to meet important objectives we have for the organization,” said Pete Jenkins, CEO of Harvey Performance Company. “The additional square footage provides much needed space to build capacity to support our growth, enabling us to expand our research and development capabilities.

The land for the project was purchased from Moody’s Co-Worker Owned, Inc. The site is located at 49 Raceway Drive in Gorham, about 5 miles from the company’s current facility which they’ve occupied for the past fifteen years. The building was designed by SMMA Architects of Cambridge, Massachusetts, whose intention was to seamlessly blend both the office and manufacturing sides of Harvey’s business while also ensuring that the buildings occupants maintain a connection to nature by introducing natural light and outdoor views. The facility was built by one of Southern Maine’s leading commercial contractors, Landry/French Construction, who specializes in build-to-suit facilities.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held in August 2019 after the project received approval from the Gorham Planning Board and the Maine Department of Environment Protection. Although some large construction projects in Maine had been hampered by dealing with COVID-19 complications, Northland Enterprises and Landry/French were pleased to stay on track for completion of the project.

Steve Vatcher, Vice President of Operations, said, “We’re thankful to the city of Gorham for their partnership through the process. This new facility will provide a great work environment and will enable us to recruit and retain highly qualified employees and technicians needed to support our growth. We wanted to build this plant close to our existing plant to minimize disruption in the lives of our valued employees.”

Jeff Davis, Vice President of Engineering, overseeing the Company’s innovation and product plans, noted that, “Our customers use our tools in the most demanding materials and applications. This investment in a state-of-the-art research and production facility demonstrates our commitment to design and manufacture the highest quality tooling that will exceed our customers’ expectations.”
